My husband got me a Paasche airbrush kit for our anniversary and this was my first usage of it too. I used glass and metal jewelry beads for some of the accents and sculpted the fur around the base to mimic the fur on her boots using a silicone brush that I adore. The sword with the skull and ornate detail is from a Purgatori action figure, the small "katana" is from a Quora Disney Infinity figure (that my husband also got me to mod into a Jubilee) and I covered that one in Aves to beef it up. Sometimes I get caught in the moment and don’t focus enough on trying to understand a product's intentions. We had gotten along quite well on our first day together but I was waiting to see if my bike riding, product testing and dissecting skills were actually up to snuff. The G2 RSCs and a 200 mm rotor would do just fine. However for a bike of this calibre, I wasn’t too fussed about the most powerful brakes I could get my hands on. What they lacked in power in the past for me, they make up for in this convenience. I do like the symmetrical construction of the Sram levers allowing for a quick, bleed free swap from left to right. With Sram G2 brakes and 200 mm front 180 rotor out back, the process was dead simple. The previous rider was from a right little, tight little Island and had the brakes swapped, obviously the WRONG way. And, like a red 1969 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Competizione Gr.4 from 1971 Le Mans, it was bold and loud. It had some dirt on it hinting at previous use, and some left over candy in the Glove Box that Seb Kemp made kept for himself on the hand off. Was it the perfect trick to sell mountain bikes to non-mountain bikers? A bike to cruise around town and hit some jumps, a bike for the trail centres that didn’t require long travel machines? I am not informed of the sales numbers but I doubt there were many bikes left over on the showroom floors at the end of the season.įor the long term review, a fiery red medium 5010 CC X01 AXS RSV showed up. This gave the 5010, and the marketing behind it, a very unique and urban feel. This was a delightful throwback to alot of us Midschool bmxers, who wasted countless hours of sessioning a ledge, jump or even a flat asphalt parking lot. Watching Loosedog do feeble grinds, fakies and barspins that look absolutely out of place on a carbon trail bike, it was an era where mountain bike videos took a turn for the lowfi, dadcam approach. The grownup kids who didn’t want to be caught riding around on little kids' bikes had an escape route with the small but burly 5010. It has been a bmxers mountain bike in a sense. A bike that is made famous by the likes of "Handy" MacAskill, Loosedog Lewis and Ratboy, each throwing it around in effortless fashion. The Santa Cruz 5010 or SOLO as it’s referred to in some circles, has always been a smaller-wheeled, short-travel play bike. Shaking my head in disbelief, I helped 5 others that were also dealing with flats on that same section of trail. It wasn’t until halfway into the day I looked at the bike laying down on its side with a flat tire, I noticed the 29/27.5 mixed wheels. Being the last day of the trip, I was riding looser, bolder and learning to trust the traction that was improving by the minute. A quick bounce around in the parking lot hinted at the intentions of the 5010. The bars were already at 760mm and suspension set to body weight for a 170 lb geared-up rider. I said, "w hat the hell“ and settled on a beautiful grey medium 5010 CC AXS RSV. I was slightly hesitant to jump on a new platform while still trying to dissect the bird at hand. On the last day of the Hightower media camp, a select few were to ride the soon to be released Santa Cruz 5010. A lot of shhhhhhs and quiet words were spoken to stay on the DL. The Hightower launch in Oakridge got a little sidetracked when I was asked to come have a peek inside the Demo trailer for something fun. When it rains, it pours around here, and for that reason, the review dogs gifted me two Santa Cruz Bikes to pedal around this summer. Step 1: User tries to sign in using Google. The Riley Four Layer Throw is breezy but substantial, making it just right for warmer weather. We think it’s worth it if you want a beautifully designed, high-end home accent. It looks and feels like a luxury throw from an artisan boutique, and it’s priced to match-it’s our most expensive pick. Anki Spets (whom I interviewed for our guide to bed blankets) is the owner and designer of the Scandinavian-inspired Area Home boutique in New York City, and she’s been selling the Liam throw for years. It comes in more than a dozen colors and two sizes (we tested the smaller one). We love that you can see the subtle weave pattern in the fabric and feel the texture through the soft fuzz of the blanket. It’s whisper-thin and drapes like a shawl, but it’s as warm as many thicker wool throws we’ve tried. But the Liam throw’s texture is much silkier, finer, and more delicate than that of any of our other throws. It’s made of baby alpaca wool, which feels soft and downy (similar to cashmere). If you’re looking for a throw that’s more refined than our other picks, we like Area Home’s Liam Throw. I loved using it while working from an armchair on a chilly day it kept me toasty from the chest down, left my hands free to use my laptop, and oozed coastal-grandmother energy. She suggested it for wheelchair users (if it’s folded in half), for people sitting for hours through medical treatments (like chemotherapy or dialysis), and for anyone who doesn’t need or want full-body blanket coverage. She also noted that because this throw isn’t slippery, like fleece throws can be, it stays put without sliding to the floor (bending over is difficult for her). “I can’t say enough good things about it,” she said, noting that the Aran throw is lighter than a cotton blanket, so it’s easier to maneuver if you have limited strength or mobility. Our 74-year-old tester told us she prefers lounging in a chair to lying on a couch (it’s easier to stand up), and this was her favorite throw in our 2022 testing for its accessibility and warmth. It’s also our smallest throw pick, so it works well as a lap blanket. It’s made in Ireland of thick, cozy merino wool, and it’s available in more than a dozen colors. The Aran Merino Aran Patchwork Throw is a fisherman’s sweater in blanket form. The company provides a one-year warranty for any defects, and it has a return policy of about 90 days. We’ve tested other, similar plush quilts over the years, but they don’t compare to this one. “So happy I could just throw it in the wash.” The Plush-Loft Throw holds up beautifully against heavy use. “She dragged three sticky lollipops across it,” she told us. I own several (including a twin size for our living room), and one of our senior editors uses this throw to cover the rug in her living room where her young daughter plays. (We also recommend the bed-size versions in our guide to the best blankets.) This throw is perfect for family life-and it’s a favorite in my house for its softness and warmth. It’s basically a fluffy quilt, and the sandwiching makes it very thick and toasty. The Plush-Loft Throw has a layer of polyester (thin but dense, to help trap air) sandwiched between a shell of smooth cotton sateen on one side and polyester plush (like a stuffed animal) on the other. The Garnet Hill Plush-Loft Throw is our winter MVP: It’s the warmest throw we recommend, it’s one of our most durable picks, and it’s been consistently available since we first tested it in 2018. We also have a separate guide to weighted blankets. We have recommendations for a toasty and durable quilt, a cozy fleece for grownups, a cozy fleece for kids, a luxe winter throw, a warm wool lap throw, a throw from a company that donates blankets to homeless shelters, a recycled-wool throw, a super-soft cashmere-wool blend throw, a comfy cotton cable-knit throw, a designer alpaca throw, a beachy woven cotton throw, and a breezy cotton gauze throw. Our picks range in price from about $20 to over $300, and we really like them all. ![]() If you’re shopping for a great throw, we think it should be in a style and material you love, whatever your budget. Over the past four years, we’ve spent more than 100 hours researching dozens and testing 59 of them. A throw is a treat when you’re having a snooze, and it can also be a beautiful accent piece, setting the style of a room. The humble throw blanket is one of the best relaxation accessories money can buy-and you don’t have to spend much. |
